An event dedicated to International Greek Language Day was organized by the Greek Ampetios School, with a special tribute to the life and work of the Amped brothers who founded the historic Egyptian Ampetios Scool 160 years ago.
The event was attended by the Greek Ambassador and graduate of the school, Nikos Garilides, the Consul General of Greece in Cairo, Giorgos Daskalopoulos, and other students and officials.
The school’s great benefactors, the brothers Ananias, Raphael, and George Amped, spent much of their fortune in the mid-19th century to create the Ampeteios School.
According to the story, all three of Amped brothers, who died either childless or single, offered a large portion of their property to the School, first established on Fouad Street in Cairo, to be relocated in 1955 to the Gamra area of Cairo. The school has been housed in the Spetseropouleio Foundation in Heliopolis, Cairo, from 1995 until today.
The secretary general of the Amped Foundation, Nicholas Vadis, read the address of the Director of the School, Archbishop Damianos of Mount Sinai, Faran and Raithu.
