Holy Vigil for the Owners of the Great Meteoron Monastery

A festive Holy Vigil was held on Tuesday, April 30, at the Great Meteoron Monastery for the celebration of the Owners St. Athanasius and St. Joasaph.

Metropolitan Theoklitos of Stagoi and Meteora officiated at the Holy Vigil, along with the Father Superior of the Holy Monastery of the Great Meteoron and Protosyncellus of the Holy Metropolis of Stagoi and Meteora Archimandrite Niphon.

A crowd of pilgrims from different parts of Greece flocked in the Monastery, who worshiped the skulls of the Holy Owners, kept in the Katholikon of the Transfiguration of the Saviour.

The Monastery was founded just before the middle of the 14th century, by Saint Athanasius the Meteorite, on the rock called “Platis Lithos”, which he called “Meteoron”, while his work was continued by his pupil, second owner, and ex Serbian ruler Ioannes Uros Angelos Komnenos Doukas Palaeologus, later monk Saint Joasaf, who in 1387/88 built a new temple, which was the Katholikon of the monastery, in the place of the church built by Saint Athanasius.
