Holy Community calls for referendum before ratifying the Prespes Agreement

The Holy Community of Mount Athos considers the recognition of “Macedonian nationality” and “Macedonian language” by the Greek state to be a contempt for history and truth.

After the end of today’s extraordinary assembly of the Holy Community for the Prespes Agreement, a statement was issued which, inter alia, called on the Greek government to respect the will of the Greek people and to hold a referendum before ratifying agreement.

The Holy Community mentions in their press release that Greek people should express themselves, because with the Prespes Agreement “the historical name of Macedonia is granted to a neighbor nation with all the consequences that this has”.

They also clarify that they have decided to send representatives in the protest rally in Athens, on January 20, “by uniting the voice of Mount Athos with the voice of Greeks against the envisaged ratification of the Agreement.”
