The Head of the Catholic Church in Belarus, Metropolitan Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, could not enter Belarus from Poland today by car, as the Polish-Belarusian border authorities did not allow him to enter the country.
They only allowed his car to be returned to Minsk. As a result, the Metropolitan will be forced to remain on Polish territory, announced the representative of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Belarus, Yuri Sanko.
“Metropolitan Kondrusiewicz remained in Poland, while his car was returned to Minsk,” Yuri Sanko said. He added that the Vatican had been informed about the incident, while, as he said, the competent authorities will be asked the reasons for refusing entry to Belarus to the Metropolitan.
Yuri Sanko clarified that the Metropolitan had a Polish passport and had no restrictions on entry into Belarus. He had recently moved to Poland where he performed religious services. The competent border authorities have not given any explanation at this time.
The head of the Catholic Church in Belarus, in an interview with the Polish Christian channel TV Trwam, referred to the way the Catholic Church views the events taking place in Belarus. He said that the Belarusian people were “mature enough to defend their rights and that they were a different generation compared to 26 years ago.”
Metropolitan Kondrusiewicz had condemned the violence by law enforcement forces against protesters.
