Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis requested and received during the summit the full and unanimous support of the European Council against the Turkish provocations, which was reflected in the text of the conclusions to be published after the end of the meeting, government sources said to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).
The prime minister, according to the same sources, informed the leaders about the Turkish actions and the fact that the Libya-Turkey “agreement” is void and does not produce any legal effect under international law. Both in terms of its content, as it infringes the rights of the Greek islands in maritime zones, in violation of International Maritime Law, and in the process, as the Libyan Parliament has not approved it.
The same sources said that during the dinner leaders agreed that these actions were contrary to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Greece has already requested in the Foreign Affairs Council (December 9) the EU’s explicit condemnation of the Libya-Turkey “agreement”, recognizing that this void agreement has no legal effect, as well as a framework for sanctions if Turkey and the government of Tripoli fail to comply and, of course, their support for Greece and Cyprus.
Government sources spoke of Europe’s diplomatic “walls” against Turkish provocations, a shield for prosperity and stability in the wider region.
