France asks for “Hagia Sophia to remain open to all”

Hagia Sophia

The French Foreign Ministry demanded today that Hagia Sophia remain “open to all”, a few hours after the Turkish State Council considered the request to convert the museum into a mosque.

“A symbol of tolerance and diversity, this place must remain open to all,” a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

Hagia Sophia has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is today one of the most visited monuments in Turkey.
