Fire on Mount Athos begun to calm down

The fire that broke out on Friday afternoon, the 12th of June, in a forest area at Cape Arapis on Mount Athos, far from the Hilandar Monastery, begun to calm down. 40 firefighters, 20 vehicles and 19 groups are now trying to extinguish the fire.

It is recalled that the fire broke out on Friday afternoon. Two Canadair aircraft, a firefighting helicopter, 59 firefighters, 20 vehicles, and three groups have been trying to tackle the blaze over those two days.

“The fire covers 700-800 acres but its intensity has dropped. The forest area is burning in Cape Arapis. However, no monastery is at risk,” said the fire chief on Saturday.
