Delegation of the Church of Crete met with the Minister of Education

Synodal delegation of the Church of Crete, visited the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Niki Kerameus, at her office on Friday, August 30, 2019.

The delegation was led by Metropolitan Makarios of Gortyn and Arkadia. Members of the delegation are Metropolitan Amfilochios of Kissamos and Selino, the Chief Secretary of the Holy Provincial Synod of Crete, Archimandrite Prodromos Xenakis, and Dimitrios Milathianakis as legal counsel.

The Deputy Minister for Higher Education, Vasilios Digalakis, and the General Secretary for Religious Affairs, Georgios Kalantzis, also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, issues of mutual concern were discussed regarding all aspects of Church-State relations, always in the context of distinct roles.

The debate was constructive and fruitful and both sides discussed in a warm atmosphere.

The minister of Education undertook to study and resolve all the issues raised, with due regard to the semi-autonomous status of Church of Crete, which canonically is under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. The minister of Education also reassured that there would be no surprise tactics or any kind of fait accompli on the part of State.
