On Friday, in Kalamata, in the presence of the President of Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, there began the proceedings of the International Scientific Conference of the Holy Metropolis of Messinia on the subject of “Franks and Venetians in Messinia – exploring the western past of the Peloponnese”.
The opening event began with the invitation of Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Messinia, who initially thanked Metropolitan Athinagoras of Ilion for his presence.
Metropolitan Chrysostomos said that the organization of the Congress pays tribute to the local Church of Messinia and is the outcome of cooperation between the Academy of Athens, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the National Hellenic Research Foundation.
He also expressed his sincere thanks to the President of the Republic, whom he called to open the Conference.
From his part, Mr. Pavlopoulos, under the auspices of whom the Conference was held, referred to the presence of the Franks and Venetians in Messinia, linking the past with the present.
The proceedings of the Conference will be completed on Sunday at noon.
