Commemoration ceremony for the victims of Smyrna Catastrophe by Metropolis of Nea Ionia

The Holy Metropolis of Nea Ionia and Philadelphia celebrated solemnly the memory of Saint Chrysostomos of Smyrna the New Ethno-Hieromartyr and of those who martyred with him during the Catastrophe of Smyrna.

On Sunday, September 15, 2019, Metropolitan Gabriel of Nea Ionia and Philadelphia presided over the Orthros and then celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Church of Saint Georgios in Nea Ionia, in the presence of Mayor of Nea Ionia Despoina Thomaidou, municipal councillors of Nea Ionia, the Center for the Study and Promotion of Asia Minor Civilization (KEMIPO), Asia Minor associations and bodies as well as hundreds of faithful.

After the Divine Liturgy, a commemoration ceremony was held for the victims of the Catastrophe of Smyrna.

The officials laid wreaths at the statue of Metropolitan Meletios of Patara while the attendants observed a minute’s silence in memory of the victims and then sang the national anthem.
