Archbishop Makarios of Australia was at the Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of Our Lady of the Angels (also known as Gouverneto Monastery) in Chania, Crete, on October 6 and 7, for the celebration of the memory of Saint Ioannis the Hermit who became ascetic in a cave adjacent to the Holy Monastery.

The Archbishop of Australia presided over the festal Vigil Service.

The Abbot of the Holy Monastery, Archim. Eirinaios, thanked the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew for the love and keen interest in the monastery. He also thanked the Ecumenical Patriarch for sending his representative, thereby validating the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s indissoluble spiritual and canonical ties with its stavropegic monasteries.

Archbishop of Australia expressed his heartfelt joy at his participation in the monastery celebration, which was his first celebration on the island of Crete, his birthplace, after his enthronement in Australia.
