“Light overcomes darkness. Nothing can scare us anymore. No one can take away the joy of God from our lives,” said the Archbishop of Athens from the Holy Metropolitan Church of Athens, where he performed the Resurrection Service, Orthros and the Divine Liturgy, behind closed doors. The services were concelebrated by Bishop Kyrillos of Abydos.

The Archbishop said that we celebrated “a blessed Easter at the time of a bitter trial.” Addressing to the faithful as a Father, he tried to speak to the heart of every well-meaning person, especially to the heart of young people, who seek the truth. “As resurrection releases, it also rises up within us. The Resurrection is the victory over death, the most terrible enemy of human beings,” said the Archbishop and underlined that the Resurrection was “our life and our promised expectation.”

“Resurrection is the essence of life. It is our hope that we will unite ourselves to our Lord, despite the warfare against the Truth regarding the universality of the Church and the efforts to convince us that Christ loves us because God follows the same line of reasoning as humans. However, contrary to humans, God works in mysterious ways,” he added.

“We have been called upon to understand the true meaning of the Resurrection through the course of history. Light overcomes darkness. Nothing can scare us anymore. No one can take away the joy of God from our lives. The Light of the Risen Christ is shining within our hearts and in our houses as long as the Holy Fire remains lit on the altar of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The light of Christ illuminates all humans. We are all called to become the light of Christ,” Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens concluded.
