With the biblical saying by Ecclesiastes, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven,” Archbishop Demetrios announced to the congregation of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Resurrection in Brookville, Long Island, that he submitted his resignation in writing to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
He referred to their meeting at the Phanar, during which he did “something that was appropriate and in accordance with the order”.
“The time has come after having served for 20 years in this truly exceptional Archdiocese under the great blessing of God of enjoying a long life. I am 92 years old,” said Archbishop, noting that this was “the honest thing he had to do”.
He added that after the formal acceptance of his resignation from the Patriarchate’s Synod and the setting of its validity date, he would be in a different ministry, dedicating his time to prayer for the flock of the Church, the Archdiocese of America, the Orthodoxy in America, the Patriarchate, the Church of Greece, for all the Orthodox people.
“It will be the ministry of prayer,” he said.
Archbishop Demetrios then announced the promotion of the priest of the community of Korona, Father George Anastasios, and awarded the highest honorary distinction of the Archdiocese, the Apostle Paul’s medal, to the businessman Christos Spyropoulos.
