“It is paradoxical, if not funny, for Turkey to indicate to Greece the need to respect minority rights,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement regarding “the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s current stance on Muslim minority schools in Thrace.”
At the same time, it highlights that history will forever be the most ‘objective judge’ as Turkey has been systematically eliminating all minorities in Turkey during the twentieth century.
Moreover, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasises that the educational choices of the Greek state are made equally and without any discrimination for all Greek citizens and are based solely on the quality of education and the interest of students. Regarding the Muslim minority, it also points out that there are 115 minority primary schools in the area, within which the education provided fully guarantees the rights of students. In addition, it says, “there are 54 Greek primary schools in Constantinople in 1955, while today there are only 3. Does the Turkish leadership know why?”
