Israeli researchers said today that a Byzantine-era church dedicated to an anonymous martyr was discovered near Jerusalem after three years of excavations.
Benjamin Storchan, who led the excavations, said “We found an inscription in the yard of the church dedicated to ‘glorious martyr’. The martyr has no name. It still remains a mystery.”
According to the Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA) the church dates from the 6th century.
Although this martyr is unknown, Benjamin Storchan said that the exceptional opulence of the Church showed that the martyr was a very important figure.
